I really need to post a review here of China trip from a month ago.... I can give suggestions for Beijing, Seoul or Chengdu if you're interested. I will say I did not like Beijing as much as Chengdu.
Beijing: Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, Summer Palace, try out the subway, try local cuisine like 'hot pot', sea cucumber, jelly fish, etc. Hiring a tour guide at the touristy spots was cheap (200 yen ~ $30 or $40)
Beijing: Dujiangyong irrigation system, Mt. Qingcheng, very spicy food, very hot women
Seoul: Use the free transit tour if you have a connecting flight through there. I had a 20 hour layover and for $10 the airport provides transportation, a tour guide and lunch for a 5 hour trip into the city. I went to Gyeongbok palace and Insaedong St, had bolgogi for lunch, bought a ton of souvenirs, and had a great time

I plan on doing all of this on my first day.

Why is that? I haven't seen much to do in Chengdu besides the Panda sanctuarys.

Think this is what I'm looking forward to the most. The pictures I've seen of Gyeongbok palace are amazing.
