Any recommendations? Would prefer to stay under $150 if possible. Would be used for deer hunting btw.

Knee boots or lace ups? Do you need them to be waterproof?

Yes, would prefer waterproof.

I would just get a pair of mucks and be done.

So 16 or 18" knee boots or would waterproof, 8-10" lace up hiking type boots suffice?
If knee boots, pick your poison with laCrosse or muck. Lace ups are a different ballgame.

mucks woody max. They retail for around 200 but there is an ebay seller that gets them direct you can get them for 130. Go to cabelas and try some on to check your size first.

That's about what I spent on my Mucks and I love them. Warm as hell, light, and last forever

Do they make good hip boots?

I have lacross 800 or 1000 gram. I don't remember which one I have. My feet were always getting really cold. Now they don't. I got the one with the zipper on the side and i will never have an insulated boot without one. Assuming we are talking rubber boots here

Switching to all Merino wool socks has helped me as much or more than the boot advancements over the shitty boots I had when I was younger.

I had someone tell me the lacross wool socks were incredible. It kind of helped but in the 30's my feet were still getting frozen. Didn't try merino though. May have to give it a try

My oldest ones are from the year they came out and are still going strong

Thicker the insulation the heavier they are to walk with. take into consideration

Merino wool is amazing stuff
If merino doesn't cut it, try alpaca wool socks. 30% lighter and warmer than comparable merino wool. You'll pay a pretty penny, but alpaca wool is unbelievable.
