It’s all out in the open now, what Texas is doing to undermine football coach Charlie Strong and send out a whistle 165 miles east to Houston. With LSU coming open, murmurs of discord at Southern Cal and Oregon and an unofficial bidding war already under way for Tom Herman, the Longhorns are going Longhorn. What Texas did this weekend, leaking the notion to both ESPN and Sports Illustrated that Strong would not be fired during the season amid a turbulent 2-2 start, is as brazen as it gets for an athletic department whose shamelessness has never before known any boundaries. It doesn’t take a genius — or an anonymous source — to understand that another 6-6 type of season will prompt Texas to seriously consider making a change.

If the Texas job comes open, then I'll worry. The Big 12 is so crappy and Texas has the remaining tough opponents playing in Austin. If they only lose 1 more he likely won't be fired. And even if they do, they may only get rid of the DC.

That's a pretty scathing article.

Certainly seems to suggest Herman would be wise to stay away from Austin if the job is open.

Polly Prissy Pants is a SJW masquerading as a sports reporter...this is all about Strong being Texas "first African- American Coach" and the big bad racist boosters who wanna get rid of him....Herman's success as a HC precipitated these schools entering into a bidding war, its called survival of the fitest, and is no place for Social Darwinism....Give Charlie his participation trophy and move along

welp, i hope coach O does enough to keep the job. if he doesn't, and the texas job comes open too, then we'll have missed our chance on herman by not canning les miles last year.

I do not know if a final decision on Strong has been made. I suspect it has. And, I suspect he is gone.

But, I am very confident that the TX AD has been in contact (indirectly) with Herman's agent (as well as agents for other coaches) to guage the interest and to see what the parameters would be should a coaching change be made.

TX was merely saying, "We aren't going to make anything official until the season is over."

But, when the decision is made official, the agreement with the successor will have already been done. They will just wait until the appropriate time to announce it.

If they do fire Strong (which I suspect they will do) and they don't get Herman, who would be on their short list? Any ideas?

Am I the only one that thinks that Herman isn't the end all be all of college coaches? I mean, don't get me wrong. I'd love to have him, but he's not the only candidate that can do damage here.

Eta: You give it your best shot to bring him here, if he chooses another team, oh well. There's other coaches that can get the job done. They just need to be given the opportunity and we need to try to be open-minded.

Exactly... Charlie Strong is gone, assuming they continue to suck this year.

I can see LSU going with Orgeron if Texas lands Herman

Depends on how this season goes

Perrin is the interim AD after Patterson was fired and may not be excited to make the single biggest decision in an athletic department when he is not the one who is going to have to live with it. It may be one of the reason's Charlie has lasted this long.

Texas is looking at three straight losing seasons, something that hasn't happened since the 1930's. And Strong WASN'T handed a rebuilding job - Mack consistently won there and recruited well. If he can't at least pull a winning season there this year, I can't see how they can't fire him.

Strong has had plenty of time to "begin" to turn the program around, and he hasn't.
