Looking for something to pull my new travel trailer better than my 1/2 ton Suburban. I am comfortable pulling it with the Suburban within 2-3 hrs of the house. But thinking long term and taking it in the mountains or across the country.

I have 4 kids so I need seatbelts but pulling ability too. Travel Trailer max GVWR is about 9000 lbs.

Eesh. Gonna have to be super high mileage or old or both. In the fords you'll be looking at the V10s basically. The GM 6.0s were good also.

Anything will have sucky MPG

People with Excursions tend to take care of them. Same with 2500 Suburbans. You dead set on a truck, because those seem to align with what you have now?

No. Not dead set on truck. Going to look at a few 2500 suburbans next week to replace the 1500 we have now. Was looking for a trailer puller/weekend truck for me really but if I replace the current suburban with a 2500 the budget goes up to <30k. They are few and far between i am finding.

Also not worried about mpg. If its just an extra vehicle for me for pulling trailer/hunting etc it will probably only take on a few thousand miles per yr

How heavy a camper?

For a quad cab diesel, you're looking at something with more than 200k miles probably

Damn, you were towing that with a Suburban?

I'd get a diesel with that, but like I said, it's gonna have 200k+ miles, and you'll probably end up spending $3k getting it ready to go on long drives. Check CL, cargurus, cars.com, and autotrader for a Ford 7.3 or GM 6.6 that has been rebuilt or replaced and get it checked out by a reputable diesel shop. I don't think Dodge had quad cab diesels until like 05.

My 1500 suburban can tow 8100 lbs so i just gotta watch the added weight. Not concerned with the local pulls on flat ground but thinking long term going to TN, NW arkansas or further where I need 3/4 ton.

Just checked autotrader for excursions with less than 150k miles for less than $10k. There are plenty listed. I'm sure there are 2500 suburnans for that match that query as well.

For that price you're probably looking at high mileage. If I were you, I'd be very careful about any gasoline engine. Diesel is probably going to be your best bet.

If gas mileage doesn't matter, get an early 2000s model F series with the 7.3. Those engines are absolutely bullet proof. Know multiple guys with over 400,000 miles on theirs. One has over a million.

A few things:

just because you can tow 8100, doesn't mean it's safe and/or will not destroy your vehicle. I know someone that had a camper that fell just under the towing capacity of their explorer so that was their tow vehicle. Absolute destroyed it.

Fords with 7.3's are going to cost more than newer trucks (all else being equal) because of his great those engines are. I rue the day I sold mine.

Sure, but it'll either have over 200k, be an extended cab, or be a work truck

Eta: I didn't check in Texas. I only looked around New Orleans

Not worried about mileage on those motors. It'll be the interior that falls apart first. A single cab 7.3

I'll check.
