Every ER has a "ring cutter". It's essentially a weak assed dremel.

A real dremel would be a fricking nightmare. It is plugged in and you need to add water or saline for the patient. To cool the ring as you're cutting. Also a real dremel would fling sparks, filings, and bits of diamond.

Also if you slip with a "ring cutter" you may nick the patient. Slip with a real dremel, and you've possibly lacerated a tendon.

I spent near half an hour and a pack of batteries trying to cut a woman's diamond wedding band. I had a diamond coated disc. No dice. Patient crying. Finger continuing to swell. I told the woman "sorry we aren't jewelers". The husband even tried to call the jeweler, i dont know why? Finally, an old Baw happened to be two doors down and overheard us. "Got cutting pliers in my truck". I told the woman she was gonna lose some karat weight. I scrubbed the pliers with betadine. I almost caught a blood covered diamond chip in the eye, but got it off.
