It's possible but I think if the team plays well we see Coach O before some MAC coach.

I am a noted pessimist and I have a feeling the hire is going to be a homerun. I understand people feeling this way because they have seen recent underwhelming basketball hires (don't confuse the draw of LSU football with any other sport - including baseball) and they confuse LSU football now with Pre-Saban LSU football.

We are viewed differently now because we are different now. The monster was awakened in 2000. The monster is falling back asleep, no doubt, but those that are dynamic see the potential.

I think we will see a national champion caliber coach take of the reigns and I foresee an immediate difference on the field next year.

I think they'll be looking for the next Nick Saban. So maybe it'll feel underwhelming at first (much like when LSU hired NS) but everyone might be surprised in time.

At this point, who knows. I wouldn't expect anything to happen until December or January.

Hire PJ Fleck, the rant will groan until the end of his first press conference. Dude is going to wreck shite somewhere and i'd just as soon it be here.

PJ Fleck?

He has an 11-18 record as a head coach and has proven absolutely nothing besides being a little better recruiter than the rest of the MAC coaches.

Perhaps he'd turn out great, but he has no record of success yet to indicate it. LSU can't go that route.

No it's 21-21 and over the last 3 years it's 20-10.

Go watch one of his pressers, he's the real deal.

At the time, hiring Saban was quite underwhelming. We may look back at it as a homerun hire, but at that time it certainly was not.

I am all for one of these guys and Fleck fits the bill I would like to see.

of those 10 losses, 6 of em or so are up against teams that the team wouldn't beat if Jesus was coaching.

I would much rather see him get a chance at being great than get a known mediocre coach like KK or Briles for God sake.

I do think Herman is the top of the heap right now, but I don't think it is going to be likely he comes here.

But to the OP, I think aside from Herman, the fanbase is going to be upset and underwhelmed no matter who it is.

I had no recollection of Saban's record prior to him coaching at LSU so I went and looked it up...

1990 - Toledo 9-2
1995 - Mich St. 6-5-1
1996 - Mich St. 6-6
1997 - Mich St. 7-5
1998 - Mich St. 6-6
1999 - Mich St. 9-2

Never even had a 10 win season prior to coming to LSU
2 of the first 3 seasons at LSU he only had 8 wins.

And now his is considered one of the greatest coaches of all time.

It's pretty interesting to see how coaches grow over time and flourish in different situations. Belichick was not a great head coach before going to New England and look at him now.

If we cannot land a haymaker punch with the next hire then the best thing to do would be to give O a three year contract and let him take his shot.

It's a very realistic possibility that LSU won't get the first several choices. LSU may have to "settle" for Coach O. And depending on how the season finishes out, that may not be a bad thing.

There will be lots of rumors about this coach and that coach. Coaches at current schools will have to answer questions about this job non stop. They will have to continually deny any interest, then if they go back on their words will be hated. Their current school will also have plenty of time to work out raises and contract extensions.

It wouldn't surprise me to see coach O get the job. I'd honestly rather him get it than some guy at mid-level program with no connections to the state.

I think a lot of people don't realize that Saban basically fell in LSU's lap. He was looking for a way out of M. State. When Dinardo was fired, Sean Tuohy contacted Joe Dean as a proxy for Jimmy Sexton. Saban wasn't even on LSU's radar. But they really had no one as a front runner, and Dean agreed to meet with Sexton and Saban at Tuohy's house.

What's funny is that Sexton told Dean "Hey, its really not about money with this guy." Dean replied "its always about money. Always."

LSU hired Saban for 1.2 million. After the deed was done, Dean asked Sexton "remember how you told me it wasn't about money?"
