I'm referring to the actual hire. Les miles was an underwhelming hire. Of course he ended up doing great. But it was seemingly wtf at the time.

What makes you think this? He was this close to bolting to South Carolina last year. He may not come, but I think he has shown interest in leaving and LSU has just as good of a change at getting him as anyone else, excluding Texas, and Texas A&M.

Like it or not, running out Miles makes the job much less attractive

With this administration? Absolutely. I have no faith they can hire a good coach here and Alleva's past hires in the entire AD prove this. Let's not forget how he handled the situation last year and now this clusterfrick. I agree, change needed to be made but the way they did it here was very shortsighted. Forget anything about money, it's arrogance. Don't be surprised if coaches say thanks but no thanks to even 6 million+ paydays by the way this administration just axed Miles without at least waiting until the end of the season. It could've been handled much better especially a guy who did so much for the program. Yes, we sucked the past few years but they could've at least let him retire or something at the end of the year. Mutual agreement, anything but this.

I'm sure many would love the job here but it also wouldn't surprise me they don't want in on this baggage. Alleva really needs to go. He's a terrible AD. Always has been and always will be.

I'm just amazed at how so few fans refuse to keep an open mind to darkhorse and wildcard candidates. Someone like Gundy would be a nice hire, but people for whatever reason don't think he's worthy lol

Fans don't know shite. When Bob Stoops went to OU he was a coordinator, not even a head coach. Tressel went from Youngstown State to Ohio St. You never know where the next Saban will come from.

Agreed. But it is possible to see current HCs that are underwhelming and assume they would continue to be underwhelming.

Yep, that is my biggest fear. LSU brass will talk themselves into a mediocre hire. I have no faith in this administration to hit a home run.

Kinda. I mean both Les and Saban were pretty underwhelming hires when they went to LSU. Hell so was Chiz when we went to Auburn.

The way I see it a coaching hire does two things:

1. It gives a team a coach

2. It validates (or not) a fan bases's perception of themselves in the pecking order of college football

The only time fans every really get a reality check about who they are is when its time to hire a coach, so in that way a splash hire has the benefit of making a fanbase feel better about itself (aka #2).

But in the long run that doesn't matter.

Revisionist history. Michigan State was hot shite that year, he was known as a great recruiter and as Belichek's disciple. Maybe it was underwhelming for Walmart fans who knew the names of five coaches.
