Images/clips of Dupre's misses & a breakdown of his technique-the answer to why

Images from practice showing why Malachi is having drops. The coaching staff has to be able to see this bad technique on his drops. I've studied it, and if it's that obvious, the coaches haven't addressed it in the proper manner. If they have, then it's on them for allowing him to continue playing this way.
Notice the wide open placement of his hands immediately before the ball arrives. This has been the positioning of his hands on most of his attempts. Hands wide apart, tries to clamp down on the ball instead of giving it a small triangle cupped pocket for it to fall into.
He "clamps down" onto the ball at the last split second unevenly causing the ball to twist out of his grasp. If he's late on this "clamp", the ball goes completely through his hands causing it to hit his face, chest, arms or completely whiff on the ball.
Notice the hands have criss crossed after the miss from his open handed clamp style.
I sure hope he and the coaches get it together, not only for the season to be a success, but for him personally to achieve his own individual goals to move on to the next level. If this terrible technique isn't addressed, it could be a long season for he and the team if he's allowed to continue starting. It is VERY correctable.
ADDED in game clips of his first drop from Etling. It shows him 2 yards in the clear at the 45 yard line. The ball is on the money past the defender and should have been caught in stride just as Desean Smith's had. He somehow decides to backpedal, shows the same wide open hand position upon the arrival of the ball, tries to clamp down on the ball instead of giving the triangle cupped pocket, clamps down on the ball unevenly twisting the ball out of his grasp. This isn't every single attempt, but on almost all of his misses that I've seen, this has been his problem. It's a bad habit he's somehow developed.
Found this nice link on the Rant from Mastrshake that has the clips of all the throws. Look very closely at the clips from the first throw to Dupre. Guy breaks it down in slow motion up close. You can see every bad habit all in one motion.

Give him a pair of gloves, sew the thumbs together and the first two fingers, make him wear them outside of practice

Wow. Somebody actually brought some insightful and informative content to this site. I'm at a loss. Thank you very much, brother. Have an upvote.

A f*cking poster on the rant picks up on this and our own coaches, with one of the highest overall salaries in college football, can't.
That's pretty sad.

Catching a football is like painting (art). You've either got it or you don't. Sure, you can get better with reps, but really good receivers don't have to be taught a certain technique. It's intuitive.
Running routes is a different story.

so you are basing all that off one catching attempt?

AU fans did warn us that Craig was a horrible WR coach and we would have bad technique.

Nice. But I would like to see it in slow motion. That still frame could be him putting his hands together to form the catch diamond.

Nice observation. I've noticed he has a hard time with bullet passes and what you demonstrated is the reason why. BH throws harder than most and when Malachi has to square up to a pass (a pass in the numbers), he goofs it like this. I think he'll have a much easier time catching Etling. If this continues though, he may need to consider staying another year. NFL scouts don't like drops to the numbers.
Though, I think Malachi has a great over-the-shoulder catch - we just haven't been able to get him that pass, those passes to him have come up short this year.
Hope he gets better soon, he's a very talented athlete.
Nice "catch", Cali

You want Craig's job?

The rant demands your coaching/scouting credentials.
You are just a message board poster, no way you can know what you are talking about.
Hell, our HC/OC make 5.6 million a year, no way calitiger from td, who is posting from his mom's basement, can have a clue about real football.
Am I doing this right?
5.6 million upvoted for you Mr. Cali

Great OP!
He needs to play more basketball. It gets your hand-eye coordination up, teaches you how to fight for balls and as the OP addressed, it teaches you to keep your hands tight when catching a ball. You dont get a helmet in basketball.

I would of pulled him I don't care what his star rating was or his name is. Dural and Chark are much better pure WRs imo you can see it on the field. Dural has gotten much much much better. He needs to be the main target from now on with chark second and MD 3rd if that. It's obvious he has issues and is another reason Les should go. He plays these guys bc he likes them as people and they may work hard but you have to put the production out on the field. MD has always looked like the game is harder for him than other WRs. Etling obviously should have been starting from the get go. It amazes me that this guy is payed so much by LSU for so long. It's sad really and I know the SEC is laughing at LSU behind closed doors. I don't trust that man anymore. With anything having to do with LSU. Great guy I guess but I want great guy and coach, so should everyone. That's what we deserve here. Passionate fans that die hard for their tigers should have a coach doing the same on and off the field. GT

Those football like objects behind him... are those footballs that he caught but with a bullet pass at the end could not catch the last one? What an idiot you are.
quote:Dude has dropped one legit pass in two games. The posi-Harris group would like you to think that he dropped 4 in the first game, but there are very few humans on Earth who could put a finger on one of those passes.

Op, thank you for bringing your experience and putting into context for us Madden all stars.
1st - I have been criticizing his drop that hit him square in the hands (the one you referenced). I've never played an organized snap in my life, but I do fancy myself on work smarter not harder. Shouldn't he have simply turned upfield and let the ball float in over his shoulder rather than do that spinny jumpy, try to make a highlight reel style of catch?
2nd - Do you think the coaches have addressed this issue (miles made coach speak reference to attaching brain to hands so that tells me they are aware) and maybe Dupre is (a) not coachable or (b) to arrogant? I think he should ride the bench until he gets his technique down honestly.
Thanks again.
