Caught The Insider the other day. I always do when it's on since it's full of such great performances. I rarely nitpick a score, but roughly halfway through - right after the great deposition scene, and lots of really nice score work - a new theme is introduced that (to me, anyway) goes ten miles past the movie and is utterly overwrought and conspicuous.

This sweeping mantra would be perfect for Gladiator, which figures since the piece's co-writer is the great Lisa Gerrard, who sang the same (fitting) style for that picture. I guess it's a nod to his impossible fight against big tobacco, but it's just too much and it reappears several more, awkward times.

Either way, it doesn't keep me from loving a film that earned seven oscar noms. It just feels like every time it plays the movie has to put on a toga until it's over.
