What are the cons to doing this?

I'm surprised more Churches don't offer this.

Biggest downside is having to deal with providers yourself. In other words, if you have a planned surgery, you let the hospital know in advance you belong to a sharing ministry and agree on a price.

The ministry will take calls from the provider and will be the ones sending the check, and whatever discount you can negotiate counts toward your deductible.

So the main downside is doing more of the work yourself as opposed to BCBS/United/whoever having a locked in price for the procedure. With the shrinking and in some cases nonexistent networks that's less of a disadvantage.

Obamacare banned any new sharing ministries from being created. Can't have people making their own choices.
