What are some places to check out? I'll be with a group of guys coming to help out with demo and repair work and the church we are staying with is doing to feed us but the day I get there and day I leave I'll have some time to check out some local places. I already know I'm going to bring back some Envie and Ghost if I can find some. Is this in most of the local grocery stores?

For the Br experience go to Chimes, Sammy's, or City Pork
You can find Envie in stores, but no go on Ghost

These threads always make me lol. Always just exposes how crappy the food scene in BR is.

I'll echo the upvotes for The Chimes, City Pork, Overpass Merchant and Beausoileil. All of those places have really good food that's priced right. Chimes and Overpass have good beer selections too. Sammy's is fine, it's just kind of far from where we live.
The Bulldog is a big beer bar. The food isn't great, but they have a big selection of beer and a bunch of TVs. Corporate Brew and Draft probably has the best beer selection in town, but they don't really offer food. Although they don't care if you bring in food and they're right by Albasha, which is the best Greek/Lebanese in town.
If you're going to buy beer, go to Calandro's Supermarket. The Perkins location is a bit better than the Government Street store. Bin-Q Liquor on Perkins also has a good selection.

Eat at City Pork and The Chimes for certain.
Some other good places to check out while you're here include:
Bistro Byronz
Twine (get the tuna poke)
Overpass Merchant
Zealand Street Grocery
Capitol City Crawfish
Tony's Seafood
Belleu's (Turducken Po'boy and etouffee suprise)
Bergeron's (it's in Port Allen, but worth the drive. Go to the meat counter and get some smoked boudin, tasso, and pistolettes, and bring home some frozen chicken patties).
Ronnie's Boudin
Roberto's River Road Restaurant (worth the drive to St. Gabriel)

Check out Tonys Seafood in NBR if you are willing to venture out.
Enjoy that first breath of smell when you walk in.

Just wanted to say thanks for the recommendations. A group of us went to Sammys last night. Some that are staying through tonight may go to Chimes when we're done working for the day. I haven't decided if I'm driving back to Birmingham tonight or waiting until tomorrow. This has been a hard two days of work and I'm just not sure if I'm up for 6 hours of driving. The pictures and videos of the flood damage don't do it justice. I'm not sure what little but we have done helps overall but I keep telling myself it definitely helps the couple of families we've been working for a ton.
