They used to be common, but populations suddenly declined during the 1940s, and they have never recovered.

Reportedly once common in the Florida Parishes.

They were the primary food source for the black panther. Sasquatch used to kill em for fun. Once they died out, the black panther population died out too.

Every skunk I see is one that I've spotted. So, yes, I've seen a spotted skunk!

But in all seriousness, no, I've never seen a spotted skunk. As one poster said they had mainly a Florida Parish range. Perhaps their decline is connected to the decline of longleaf pine savannah habitat.

Yes. I've even caught a few, but I am currently researching spotted skunks.

In Louisiana, Eastern Spotted Skunks were historically located in the Florida Parishes and Cameron/Calcasieu Parishes (probably the Cajun Prairie Parishes as well). They were very rare in N. Louisiana. While not as common as in other states, trapper records indicate that several thousand per year were caught in the 1930's.

There was an American Society of Mammalogist meeting at LSU during the 30's or 40's (I forget which year). In preparation, members captured 2 spotted skunks on the LSU campus. They "de-scented the skunks" and the 2 became the mascots for that year's meeting.

Where I grew up in N. Alabama, the only skunks I ever saw were spotted skunks. I see them dead on the road sometimes where I live now.
