Over last few years I get really light headed when blood is drawn. Yesterday I blacked out and apparently went into convulsions and hit an assistant, I mean wtf. Needles and blood have never bothered me. I let rookies practice iv sticks on me all the time at work. I played football and have been hit in the head for one reason or another and never been phased.

Why the heck am I doing this with only a few vials of blood drawn? Other than being a big pussy, are there other reasons for this? Like I said, I've gotten light headed in past after 4-5 vials of briefly blacked out. Never anything like yesterday though.

You more than likely had a vagal response, and you have no control over it. Sometimes pain, or stress can cause a drop in blood pressure.

This has always happened to me, and I don't understand it.

Maybe something with high or low blood pressure? That's the main thing that I can think would change with blood being drawn

fricking scary. I've never had a problem but some people react badly.

My pregnant wife passed out while the tech was drawing blood a couple of months ago. They called me in there to get her some water and she was passed out twitching and sweating. She was so hot to the touch. It scared the shite out of me.

Yea, I know. Cool story, bro. But damn that was not cool to see.

One thing you can do is ask for them to lay you down flat before drawing blood. I'm not sure if it's true or not, but I was told that if you lay flat it is very difficult to pass out. Also, look the other way when they are drawing blood.

Next time please alert tech that this will happen. They should lay you down and get the ammonia vial ready. It's quite common, especially for men. The bigger they are, the harder they fall.

Do you have claustrophobia?
I think there's a connection between trouble with blood being drawn and this phobia.

Vagal response is probably what is happening.

I had blood drawn last week, and the nurse said, "Oh shite" when the blood started squirting out all over the place. Didn't pass out. I have had my head cut open at the doctor a few times, and I start sweating when that happens. I think it's because I can't see it, but I can feel it.

Did you watch?

Eta: I'm getting blood drawn in 50 minutes. Will report back if I die

I agree about laying down when having blood drawn. I've passed out more times than I want to admit. I just tell them now that I pass out when having blood drawn and I need to lay down. They have no problem taking me into an exam room to lay down. Last time when I laid down it did not phase me at all.

Are you holding your breath while waiting for the blood to be drawn? You may not realize you're doing this, but that was my problem. I now always lay down and focus on my breathing while they take it - never had the problem again. FWIW I used to faint every time, including one time with convulsions like you mentioned.

Yeah you're having a vagal response. Don't sweat it. Started happening to me in my early 20s. Was dating a girl and she decided that a good date would be to donate blood. I didn't even make it to the draw, I nearly conked out when they pricked my fricking ear.

She broke up with me not long after. I never found out why.

On another occasion, I hit the floor in the elevator after having a TB stick done. The people who were waiting at the bottom got an awesome shock. I stood up and walked out.

I started an IV on a guy once while on the monitor. Young healthy guy. He said "I got problems with needles" I hear it all the time so I lower his head of the bed to make sure he can't slump over. He STILL passes out.

I look up at the monitor. An entire strip (or screen) of P-waves. Which means for about 6 full seconds his heart did not beat. His ventricles did not contract. No matter how big of a pussy you are, you aren't a big enough pussy to stop your own heart.
