Martha Quinn, Alan Hunter, Dweezil Zappa, Nina Blackwood... Videos were cool with Benatar, Mellencamp, ZZ Top, Motley Crue, and on and on. WTF happened? Now its a cesspool of Gangsta, Hip Hop, political bull shite that gets mentioned once a year because they still have the MTV video awards.

I want my MTV back.

In hindsight, I thought MTV had 2, maybe 3 great years, before the record labels began manipulating the format & douching up the entire musical era. Of course, back then I didn't realize it so much...I loved those first 2-3 years so much, I stuck around longer, like a junkie in search of his next quality fix

IMO Martha Quinn actually looks hotter now than she did back in the day...the others, ummm, not so much.

Check out MTV Classic. It's the old VH1 Classic.

Beavis and butthead, videos, etc.

I remember VMA's with Oasis, REM, STP, RHCP, Garbage, etc.

I like hip hop but man it's just taken over way too much.

MTV did a snarky live blog of the 1984 VMA's to highlight how lame we all were back in the day. And what happened is it actually highlighted the diversity of music and opinion on the channel in its early days, which is sort of what made it great. It played everything. A quick list of the artists that won awards, performed, or appeared on stage/video as part of the proceedings:

Rod Stewart
Cyndi Lauper
Michael Jackson
David Bowie
Diana Ross
Eurythmics
Joey Ramone
The Cars
The Go Go's
Ray Parker, Jr
The Rolling Stones (sort of, Ron Wood and Mick Jagger, separately)
Van Halen
Madonna
RATT
Billy Idol
Herbie Hancock
Hall and Oates
Peter Wolf (of the J Giles Band)
Huey Lewis and the News
Dale Bozzio (Missing Persons)
ZZ Top
Tina Turner
Quincy Jones
Sheila E (cuz Prince wouldn't deign to show up)
Duran Duran
Iggy Pop

Can you imagine a modern equivalent to this lineup on the VMA's? I mean, we're covering the whole pop spectrum as it existed in 1984 plus several legacy heavy hitters. That is a spectacularly great, and varied, lineup.

Oops. Here's the link.

We need to make MTV great again.

And build a wall to keep all those rappers out.

Not one single rock-and-roll performance last night. Just pop, rap, and R&B.
