We live on the coast in MS and have an awd suv.
The only time I notice it is when the roads are wet and if you are driving on a gravel/wet rutted road. Really depends on how important that is to you. My particular vehicle came with it as std equipment so it didn't cost us anymore when buying.
I do feel safer on wet roads but I'm not sure it's worth $2k

It is possible that it will cost more to maintain over the lifetime of the vehicle. Transfer case, cv shafts, more sensors and electronics etc.
