As of the first day of classes, Mizzou enrolled 4,799 freshmen — the smallest class in almost a decade. That number is down more than 1,600 incoming freshmen from fall 2015.

University officials braced for a smaller freshman class for months following a string of events last fall that brought the campus under national scrutiny. Protests centered largely around matters of race led to deep divisions among the campus and community and to the resignation of the school’s top two leaders.

Preliminary data show a 12 percent decline in out-of-state undergraduate students, and a 6 percent decline of in-state undergraduate students compared to fall 2015.

Graduate student enrollment also took a hit of about 7 percent. A falling-out last year between graduate students and administration was another national narrative after the students lost their benefits and voted to unionize.

The drop is even worse than officials at the school were predicting last spring. In March, interim chancellor Hank Foley warned the school was facing a drop of 1,500 students.

The decline is wreaking havoc on the school’s budget, which has a hole of about $30 million. To contain costs and reflect its shrinking population, the school has already shuttered several dormitories.

Reap what you sow, Mizzou, you disgrace of the SEC.

I wish that the SEC had never taken Mizzou in. Terrible fit. St. Louis TV market isn't worth it.

Enrollment is indeed down. A few old dorms were in fact closed. This was expected to occur before CS1950 used Mizzou as a test bed for radical racism.

Regardless, enrollment will soon bounce back. CS1950 will fade with time.

And, most importantly, Mizzou will return to kicking arse in football this year including a victory over LSU at Death Valley.

It's coming...

If a University head doesn't study the carnage at Missouri and stand up to this non-sense then they should be fired on the spot when confronted with it. This is a case study which shows that All ethnic groups will boycott a university. The 4799 number by the way is before the drop outs hit too which is typically another 3-4% in the first semester (does not include those who flunk out which pushed the numbers up to another 10% roughly.

Mizzou is going to have a very difficult time retaining the best and brightest professors because budget cuts will only cripple them more.

Missouri let itself get bullied by a fat rich black kid skipping meals over an anti-Semitic symbol drawn in poop. Missouri should get shut down for that.

Not that I have any problem with this article, but thought this was funny.

It's sort of fun to watch this happen to Missou and they certainly deserve it.

HOWEVER. Given that clearly, there are enough people in America who CAN make such a difference, the reality that this isn't happening to a BUNCH of schools is sad.

I can tell you that when my kids are college age, dear old Dad will have a LOT of say in where my money gets spent.

Sure, crazy seems to have infected almost every college campus but it's definitely worse in some places than in others. THAT will most certainly play a part.

For those that think, "but what about the great program in X at XYZ University"!!!

Blah blah blah. No University has a corner on any particular study area. Besides, if you think about it, the crazy in these places actually TARGETS the very type of people who can have the most financial effect.

I think American Parents by themselves could create a strong shift in University behavior and policy just by being more careful with where their money goes.
