Full synthetic costs the same as standard oil in the long run. If you have to change conventional oil every 3,000 miles, that's 3 oil changes at $30-$40 a pop vs. 1 oil change at $100.

Does any manufacturer recommend this anymore? My last three vehicles said at least 5,000 in the manual, and I think one said 7,000.

It's not nearly this expensive if you do it yourself. Changed my gf's oil in her Jeep with Castrol Synthetic and a Wix filter from O'Reilly for $58. It'll last a good while.

Yes, but I think everyone is overlooking that I don't pay attention to my mileage. I basically just listen to the computer. So if it pops up with 5% oil life left, then I really don't know how many miles that was. So it's not like I can say "well it's synthetic, so I'll go xxx more miles". I pretty much just listen to what the car says. And if it's going to tell me to change it at the same time whether I use standard or synthetic, then it is a savings to use standard.

It may be smarter for me to just pay attention to actual mileage, but ain't nobody got time for that.

The Ford dealership where I bought my truck for some reason has some coupon on their site that for a $50 synthetic oil change that I use literally every single time. Probably have used it 12-13 times at this point.
