You would think so.

I guess it would depend on how the machines are using humans as 'batteries'. Is that ever explained?

You would think there would always be a better option that would be less of a pain in the arse than keeping humans around.

This is where I may be filling in the blanks that the Wachowski sisters didn't necessarily intend - of course it cannot be pure electrical energy from the body - I can't see how they would get much of a return on the investment that way. Maybe it is disposal of the bodies at the end of life, but, again, the reproductive rate wouldn't support that either.

If it was just our bodies, it would make more sense to either use an animal OR terminate higher brain functions very early. I think it is implicitly our higher brain activity - something that lower order animals don't possess and another reason to manufacture a realistic "faked" environment for those in the matrix. Thus this drives the cold war between Zion and the machines - they want to keep folks plugged in and they can't afford to do it any other way than they're doing it.
