Matrix question

Been watching Matrix today on BBC and it never occurred to me to think about what the tunnels are that the ships travel through. Any ideas?
Why do the machines want to get rid of humans? They need humans to survive. Why not just allow humans that escape the matrix to live in peace and have a truce of no battles?
Why give humans their fake existence? They wouldn't know the difference just being an energy source

It's all pretty much explained in the movies.
Correct me if I'm wrong but:
1) City sewers and tunnels.
2) the whole thing started with a war of extermination between man and machine and the fighting is just a continuation of that.
There are humans in Zion that were never in the Matrix. Those would be the decedents of the people that had been fighting the machines for generations. And if humans in the matrix are their power source, why would the machines let them escape?
3) Fake existence makes them complacent. Cant even consider being human batteries = less chance of revolt.

It's implied due to the initial war, but the machines actually know where they are. It's really all a lie to keep humanity in check.

Because humans would continue to wage war on them. That's why they allow them to escape, let them think they're effectively fighting them, and then purge them with a human they've specifically designed to start it all anew. They're pretty good at this, at least until Smith changed the status quo.

Morpheus looks directly into the camera in the first movie while talking to Neo and explains they are old sewer and subway tunnels.

The humans that do escape don't live in peace, they actively try to fight and kill the machines. No peace can be reached while the machines use humans as fuel.
Morpheus explains this into the camera in a red leather chair talking to Neo. Tank confirms that humans, matrix born or otherwise, will always fight.

Agent Smith directly and explicitly explains this into the camera when he's trying to break Morpheus mind.
Did you even see the movie?

If you think too much into the Matrix it ruins it.
If you think the movie has any sequels it ruins it.
Neo flies off at the end and goes to fight the machines, the end.
