My dad was a military officer so I was taught to say sir

Ditto.
And he was still in when I was enlisted myself. So whenever I interacted with him in a military context (rare, but it happened) I had to address him as "sir", anyway.
I still call him "sir" to this day. I'm 50, he's almost 71.
