My kid made the transition from a Honda Z50 to a KTM Pro Sr. , then to a KX65. And he barely had any seat time on the KTM because it was in the shop 5 of the 7 months we owned it. And he wasn't the most adept rider in the early days.
However, as said, those little bikes are pretty easy to sell for a decent price, so if you don't mind making the transition over a couple bikes the 110 isn't bad to start on. But if he has any interest in racing, the 110 is pretty useless.
