my childhood best friend has been roughnecking for Chevron since he was 18, he works in nigeria now and says his goal is to not die on every shift

Met many guys who had their surgeries while they were back home. In between trips.
Said safety meetings consisted of not leaving the compound, "please don't mess with the Cobras." Whenever a large container or some drums were moved there was a 10% chance a cobra may run out. The local contractors would catch them and kill them to take home. To EAT! The meeting basically made it clear that they had zero anti venom and they were hours away from any. So if you got bit you were fricked.
Would have taken one cobra to put me back on a plane.
