All I know is that these WI folks are getting hyped. I'm in Milwaukee at the moment and everyone I've talked to has brought it up...although I am from Louisiana which may have something to do with it

Well, best since 2014. Last year's offensive line was the worst since about 1995. Couple of players had to leave the team for medical reasons before the season and then a bunch of injuries hit.

Best offensive line probably was 2010 when the starting five plus the sixth man all got NFL jobs.

No, Vegas sees their bettors thinking LSU will win. So they set the line accordingly. They're always foolproof anyway lol.

Those LSU FANS thinking this will be a cake walk are nuts. Think back to 2014 and that was in our backyard. LSU should win but if they come out flat or shaky, and wisky is ready to play, it's gonna be a game.

Will be close. Probably will be neck and neck until the 4th quarter.

In the last five years, only LSU, Alabama, Ohio State, and Florida State have more Top-75 draft picks.

If that is true, that's an absolutely ridiculously impressive statistic.

5 year average recruiting class rankings
Bama = 1
Fl. State = 4.6
Ohio State = 5
LSU = 6.2
Wisconsin = 41.8

Sorry, I meant last six years. Going into the 2016 NFL Draft, Wisconsin was fourth nationally in Top-75 picks over the last five years until Ohio State had seven selected Top-75 selections in 2016.

I believe totals (2011-2016) look like:
1. Alabama (26)
2. LSU (18)
3. Florida State (17)
4. Ohio State (16)
5. Wisconsin (13)

There are lots of theories about why Wisconsin has out-performed its recruiting rankings almost every year since 1993.

In no particular order:
- Wisconsin high school players are lightly regarded by recruiting gurus. JJ Watt, Melvin Gordon, Joe Thomas all wound up as five star talents who were lightly regarded.

- Wisconsin tends to sign in-state kids with little drama. Without the drama, those kids don't garner high guru rankings.

- Great coaching and coachable kids. Nice thought.

- Walk-on program. As the only D1A program in the state, lots of kids would prefer to walk-on to getting a low D1A scholarship or a D1AA ride out of state. Out of maybe 15 or 20 walk-ons each year, only two or three need to be good to greatly boost on the field performance compared to recruiting rankings. (Three important players last season - Stave, Erickson and Schobert were walk-ons)

- Wisconsin coaches refuse to play games with the recruiting gurus. They don't care about recruiting rankings, just winning games.

- A negative halo effect from the days Wisconsin was really bad.

Take your pick.

fantastic reply. thanks for taking the time!

I find those theories believable when taken by themselves. However, it seems that another program would find themselves in the midst of at least some of those circumstances. But even teams that recruit in the 20's don't come close to replicating those NFL numbers.
Whatever the cause, it is a VERY significant anomaly.
Incredibly interesting discussion but somewhat off topic.

The one thing that really stands out to me during the game two years ago was your two starting DT got hurt during the middle of the game. They (Wisconsin) were dominating us up front until the second starting DT went down with an injury in the third quarter. Had they not been injured I believe more than likely we (LSU) would have lost that game.
I also remember Wisconsin's QB struggled that day and Diarse made a game changing touchdown that shifted the momentum for the Tigers. Wisconsin rallied late and almost pulled it out. Oh yeah, and that damn Melvin Gordon was a player!

Hmmm... I know this is a discussion about players but what about coaches. Seem to me the best team to figure out our new DC would be... hmmmm... Wisconsin!

Without question, the foundation of Wisconsin's success comes from its walk-on program. There are several former players in the NFL, all of whom are from Wisconsin, that walked-on. The most notable of these names is J.J. Watt.

One thing you notice with many of the walk-on players that commit to Wisconsin is that many held FBS and FCS offers. These aren't Division II or III players. They have every opportunity to grow within the program for four- or five-years and be impact players by their senior season. Of course, some made significant impacts for multiple seasons.

For example, Wisconsin already has three preferred walk-on players for 2017 that have a combined 15 Division-I offers, a few of which include Northern Illinois, Buffalo, Western Michigan, Wyoming, North Dakota State, Illinois State, Northern Iowa, and South Dakota State.

To piggy-back off this, Wisconsin's leading passer (Stave), rusher (Ogunbowale), and receiver (Erickson) last season were all former walk-ons. The last time Wisconsin had a scholarship receiver lead the team in receiving yards was 2010... Take your pick as to whether that's a good thing or not, but Jared Abbrederis and Alex Erickson have had no difficulty burning some of the better CB's in the B1G.

Defensively, one of its two best players (Schobert), was an All-American and won B1G Linebacker of the Year.

I forgot about Leonhard. At 5'8" he was undersized for a safety, but had 11 interceptions his sophomore year and 21 in all. Intercepted two passes against Minnesota, one with a broken arm. He stayed in the game and played until he broke his other arm.

Had a ten year NFL career and was named captain of the Jets defense as well as Baltimore's.

Was hired as a Wisconsin assistant this season.

Speaking of Jim Leonhard, one of Wisconsin's starting CB's, Derrick Tindal, had this to say after being asked about the rapport with Leonhard (now Wisconsin's DB coach):

quote:

That’s the man. He was a great player. Probably still is. Who knows. He’s one of the best, probably the best, I’ve ever had. He’s patient. The excitement he has when he comes out on the field every day. It’s fun. He just changes the whole atmosphere of the team. He’s just patient. He knows at cornerback you’re going to be called on. We take it hard on ourselves. He takes it hard. I just love the fact that he loves football and loves us and actually wants to help us. Sometimes we have a group (text) message and he sends us funny things on group messages. I love him.

Have heard nothing about good things since Leonhard came on. He's hit the ground running.

That's pretty awesome. Always seemed like a great guy when he was in the league, and seems to be very good at getting along with his players. Wouldn't surprise me one bit if we see his name floating around as a HC candidate at big schools soon.

Is he one that Wisky is his dream job, or would he coach other places?

Yeah that game.

We had a coach start a horrible QB that didn't fit our program. Gave us zero passing attack.

Then our heisman caliber running back doesn't get the ball the majority of the 2nd half.

Our DL loses its best/most critical player to injury. Worst case scenario almost.

Les rolls out a fake punt.

Boom. Tigers come back to win.

All could have been avoided, but not meant to be. When Wisconsin loses a starter is it much harder for us to replace than those top 10 recruiting teams. We have to develop guys over time at most positions.

Healthy, we can usually compete with anybody in any given year.

Those reasons posted above of how we get it done on Madison are exactly true. In state, we are the only D1 school and there are also no D2 schools.

LSU has that aura of a juggernaut, but in reality teams like Arkansas (similar to UW) have given you fits. I think this can be a good game, but the combo this season of Aranda and LF give me pause. Plus it won't be a severe road game considering the crowd breakdown.

LSU by 24 this year. This team has something to prove, and will be looking to make a statement right out the gate.

Very smart player. He headed more than a couple of Rex Ryan's defenses as a captain. Pound-for-pound one of the tougher defensive players in the league at 5-foot-8. Lasting a decade at that size is impressive.

That being said, it is a total wait-and-see with Leonhard as coach. He's only recently retired and this is his first gig.

If Leonhard pans out as a DB coach and a smaller school comes calling about a Defensive Coordinator position, one could posit that he bolts, I suppose. However, given Wisconsin only has a single team in the entire state, coupled with Leonhard's "legend" + being one of the most-decorated DB's in school history, I have to imagine it's a dream job that Leonhard would come back to.
