Finger food, bite sized, something they can touch/pick up/hold. No sticks, toothpicks, or layered stacks. How about little fritattas in a mini muffin tin, so each kind could have a two bite, easy to grab eggy tidbit. Put shredded zucchini and Parmesan in the frittata.
Or maybe some marinated ovoline or small fresh mozzarella balls; chopped fresh basil, a little balsamic or red wine vinegar, a little olive oil. Put 2-3 in a little cup for each kid, easily eaten w fingers, and not completely unfamiliar, as most kids his age have eaten string cheese, at least.
Tiny pizza bites (cut from a larger pizza) or focaccia squares......topped w tomato and cheese. Again, familiar in form to the kiddos but clearly Italian. If you wanted to challenge their senses, put a few chopped olives on top.
