I'm not a big Rum drinker. I usually drink Bourbon, and occasionally will have some Vodka or Tequila on hand. But those are two widely known brands of Rum and while they're not top shelf, in the situation of buying for a party or get together, they'll be fine. All you're going to be doing is making mixed drinks out of the Vodka, Tequila, and Rum, and possibly mixing the bourbons as well. I've never been to a party at someone's house where they bust out some expensive rum and people are drinking it straight. Which is exactly what the OP asked for suggestions with. I probably haven't bought a bottle of rum this decade.
