I don't know what the line is as far what cops are willing cover ups. I just know that past history says that if they want they can get away with basically anything.
Do you think that stuff isn't covered up in crime ridden communities? Considering how much trust they have in law enforcement, I would say absolutely.

So, let's throw out the history of the individuals who were killed. Even though we know for a fact that Sterling was convicted on multiple offenses. Setting that aside, there are obvious differences in the situations.

We can say we know for a fact what the intentions were of the individual who killed BR police. We know what the intentions were of the individual who killed the Dallas police officers. They wanted to kill police officers plain and simple. They didn't know who they were killing. They didn't know the names of the cops. They didn't know the history of the cops. They just wanted to kill cops. One of them wanted to kill white cops.

For the officers who shot Sterling, you can say you THINK they wanted to kill him. You can say they were murderers, but you don't know. Evidence is and can be presented for both sides. And it will be continually. Not only that, Sterling was in the immediate process of committing a crime. He was given opportunities to comply. There was no fatal assault on him until later. He was tased before he was shot and he CONTINUED to not comply.

Even in a best case scenario with Sterling given the benefit of the doubt, looking only at facts, there is a massive difference in the two.

There have been 8 police officers who have been murdered in the past week or two with the killer knowing absolutely NOTHING about who he was killing. There is a HUGE difference in the two. One of the people we know for a fact is a violent child molester also. Look at facts, bro. Don't assume. That's what these cop shooters did.
