Though I guess it's possible the dad took them minor league games I'm assuming they were going to Chicago, Saint Louis, or Cincinnati for the baseball games.

Chicago especially I could see it being possible that he ditched his dad for a bit to check out an import record shop.

It isn't impossible that he happened to hear about an obscure band somewhere. He could have met someone at a concert or any number of places. Maybe he had a close friend who was a huge music nerd. Maybe the record shop in town has an owner who has a personal relationship with Jonathan and shares access of music that would otherwise be unavailable to most teenagers. Just because it wouldn't have been typical doesn't mean that it was impossible.

Trying to stuff each character into neat little boxes that have to fit how you think they should be is absurd. Life and people are too varied for that. This isn't some anachronism mistake like talking about the Smiths before they actually were a band.

Kinda agree because that's something that only a person like Baloo would pick up on

I did preface it that it was a nitpick. And the only reason I bring it up is because every other reference was so perfect. This is a show in which one kid tells his friends he will not lend them his X-Men 137... and expects you to know that's the Death of Phoenix. This show is ABOUT its references.

The Smiths thing is like Kate Winslet having the Picasso in Titanic. It's an easy shorthand to show how much smarter/perceptive she is than Billy Zane and her mom. In a big blockbuster like Titanic, I don't mind that obvious of a pop culture stroke, because you're playing to the bigger audience. This show was playing to the niche, so a lazy reference sticks out a lot more. They are drawing character through references, like they did with everyone, and Jonathan's are slightly off. It didn't ruin the show or anything, but he was drawn as too cool.

I mean, I loved the show, but sifting through the myriad of references is sort of the point. It's designed for nitpicking and Spot the Reference. That's part of the fun.

Very rarely would I call a show perfect, but this show is absolutely perfect.

I feel this way, as well. It really does almost everything, outside of some pacing issues, well. The pacing shoots up and down, but otherwise, I think it's a masterpiece.

It has such an "authentic" 80s feel to it that it feels like it's genuinely an 80s show. For instance, I loved the "clueless 80s dad" trope being used so well. It was really well done. I thought the kids were insanely gifted actors and actresses for their ages. The music and sound were absolutely breathtaking.

I think what sticks out to me the most is how much charm it has. It reminds me a lot of True Detective where you're always questioning yourself while watching it, but it also has a ton of charm and light moments to make it less of a gauntlet. It's still fun and hope is still there due to the focus on the kids, but it's still got very dark and real themes.

It's got issues here and there, but I think this is one of the best series to come out of any studio in a long time. It does so much right that what it does wrong is easily forgotten.

me and my wife rarely binge shows, but we binged this one this weekend

loved every bit of it

and in Baloo's defense, my wife commented on the The Smiths reference with "he shouldn't be that cool"

Just finished the first installment. Can't wait for more. Duffer Bros. did such a great job with capturing the essence of the 80's adventure/horror era.

Netflix's Stranger Things Season Two will be a sequel

quote:

More than a few of you probably spent your time last weekend binge-watching Netflix’s latest series Stranger Things. Matt and Ross Duffer‘s sci-fi show was embraced so quickly by the streaming service’s customers that a season two is already confirmed. The Duffer Brothers have shared a few details about what to expect from the next season of their hit show.

Below, learn more about Stranger Things season two.

Executive producers Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen told us season two would follow the same characters and introduce critical new ones. Season one ended with, as Levy said, “questions that merit future stories and future investigation,” especially regarding one key character’s surprising change in motivation.

Speaking with Variety, Ross Duffer said there’s plenty they know about this world they’ve yet to show viewers:

There’s a lot there we don’t know or understand. Even with ‘The Upside Down,’ we have a 30-page document that is pretty intricate in terms of what it all means, and where this monster actually came from, and why aren’t there more monsters — we have all this stuff that we just didn’t have time for, or we didn’t feel like we needed to get into in season one, because of the main tension of Will. We have that whole other world that we haven’t fully explored in this season, and that was very purposeful.

I really hope they can build on what was a near perfect first season. This show was a huge surprise.

has anyone discussed the Russian guy in the "upside down"?

why was he there? was that an indication that the Russians were also attempting to get there?

The way I understood it, 11 was just using the upside down as sort of a bridge to be able to spy for the US govt in faraway lands, hence the Russian. The link to The Upside Down from our world never existed until she touched the monster.

ETA-Look up the X-men character Nightcrawler's teleporting ability. Sort of the same thing.

Definitely what was happening. The Russian wasn't actually in the other dimension. Eleven was just using the spiritual plain to spy for the government, and the governement was testing their limits when they stumbled upon the monster. Also, I don't think that actually was the upside down at that point. It was all black plain and didn't look like the reflection that is the upside down. I think it was just some in between plain that Eleven is able to tap into to project her mind across space and dimensions.

Something that I was think about was the amount of time that Will spent in the upside down without food or water. He was there for like a month, right? How was he surviving? What was sustenance? Is there more to this or is it just a minor plot hole? I don't care if it's a plot hole, but I was wondering.

Wasn't it more like a week or so? I think the entire show was basically about a week and a half to two weeks. Not that it isn't a minor plot hole I was wondering about when I saw him in the fort myself, but yeah.

As others said, it was closer to a week.

I'm also assuming that it's possible he could've found something to sustain him in the upside down if we're assuming the box Hopper fills with food and Eggos can be accessed by Eleven in the upside down.

it seemed like everything in the show happened within a week or so

on the Russian- I think they were just using 11 to spy on them.

here is a translation from reddit

quote:

There are rumours that Americans have exposed few of our spies on American soil. We are checking it. Perhaps it was intentional disinformation in order to shift our focus from more important things. Contact Evgeniy, Sergey and Anatoliy, find out who made a contact (with them) and if someone didn't, report to me immediately... Actually no, bring Sergey to me right away (/now); He was on duty when this information... "

The scene cuts off to the lab/facility and last few words are repeated again.

"<...> this information... Rumours, appeared first. I need to know where rumours came from..."

Scene cuts back to 'upside-down' World (or rather a limbo at that point) and few words are repeated again.

"<...> rumours came from. If this is not disinformation, but I am fairly certain (that it is disinformation), I don't want to think about the consequences. Go now, what are you waiting for? Hurry up, I need to know where rumours came from.
