It can be attributed to his solid recruiting (which has slowed down) and the fact the SEC is a terrible basketball conference.
Wait. Is recruiting part of being a college basketball coach?
The SEC is not terrible.

Is there any more room under the rock you're living under? I would like to escape reality too.

Terrible?
The SEC isn't the top college basketball league out there, but terrible is way over the top.

People in this thread are literally pathetic.
Jones does better with a lesser team that he can get to play hard. He is a mediocre coach who could not handle the personalities last year.
With that said, LSU won't be NEARLY as bad as some of you think. It's addition by subtraction losing Quarterman and Gray. I loved Gray, but you never knew what you would get. No matter TQ's abilities, his cons outweighed the pros last year and really hurt us...his defense was soooo atrocious.
We didn't have Hornsby most of the year so he's not even a loss. Obviously losing Simmons will be a killer, but it'll allow the team to play exactly like that...a TEAM. Last year, it was stand around and let TQ do something or stand around and let Simmons do something.
Sampson, Blakeney, and Victor will all be better. One would have to assume Epps will get better and Robinson can give a few solid minutes.
Personally, I think Reath and Jenkins will come in and be PERFECT fits for what we want to do. I fully expect an 9-9 or 8-10 SEC record and be a bubble NIT team. Is it good? No, but it will NOT be as bad as many people think. LSU should beat Wichita State without Van Fleet and Baker. They will always be difficult, but they had an amazing 4 years spearheaded by the dynamic duo. They had role players everywhere then 2 studs...they will be a shell of their former selves.

A reasonable take on LSU basketball.
Clap, clap, clap.
I disagree that Jones is mediocre. You don't roll out winning season after winning season if you are mediocre, but I see why that thought is out there.
Not the best Xs and Os guy. I buy that.
I had gotten to the point where I didn't think anyone had a clue about hoops on here.

The sec is bad. It was a 3 bid league. You know what other league was 3 bid? The A-10. Sec was behind the American and big east as well as all the other power 5 teams. In actuality we were a 2 bid league cause vandy lost the play in game.
You roll out winning seasons by playing a crappy schedule like we do. Kennesaw state, American, gardner-webb, McNeese, charleston(ops we lost that one)Morehouse, savannah state, etc.
In 4 years jones is 40-32 in conference (.560 winning percentage) If your barely over 50% in a 2 bid league you don't belong in the tournament.
Guess what he was 91-89 (.506) at north texas in conference. and only won the league title 1 time, and only finished higher than 3rd twice.
We are who our record says we are, and 56% is pretty mediocre, especially since Jonny has had 4 nba draft pics, 2 1st rounders and the number 1 overall selection and zero tournament wins to show for it.
So basically we front load our schedule with crap teams, then win half of the league games. what a vibrant program.
But you get what you pay for and Jones is the 11th highest paid coach ($1.2 mil)
I would like to see the administration make a commitment to the program and go pay for a top 3 coach in the league ( rick barnes is 3rd at $2.3 mil)Avery Johnson Makes $2.8 is second highest paid coach

Wichita St doesn't have anyone returning from those final 4 teams this season FWIW
Posted on 7/13/16 at 4:34 pm to tzimme4
You mean someone like Bruce Pearl?
He's 9-27 in conference play at Auburn and is 28-40 his last four SEC seasons.
Oh, wait. Rick Barnes?
32-40 in conference play the last four years in the SEC and Big 12.
Avery Johnson?
8-10 in conference play his first year at Alabama, worse than Jones has done in any of his four seasons at LSU.

Got 2 downvotes for saying we won't be as bad as people think. Love LSU fans.

We have beaten much better teams. Wichita State isnt some unstoppable force. They have also lost their best players from last year I believe. I could be wrong on that last part, dont feel like looking it up.

Greg Marshall with a roster of nobodies probably beats Johnny Jones with a roster full of NBA players let's be really real.

They'll look like an unstoppable force when we play them.

Based on 1 game vs. A&M?

Hopefully basketball season will only have to last about 5 weeks this year. (National championship game mid January to opening pitch late February). Cause we are gonna be seaux bad.

this can not be overstated. fans will be jaded because of the Kentucky game, but TQ was fricking terrible last year on the court, and even worse in the locker room

quote:Yeah, I was gonna post on this. It's amazing how far teams like St Johns and DePaul, schools that used to excel and that don't have football, have fallen off so much.
quote:
There are 7 teams that are good at basketball and then there is LSU
You should watch more basketball, man. St John's was a disgrace last year- one of the 5 worst teams in a power conference.

Gonna be a rough year I feel like
Posted on 7/14/16 at 8:47 am to lsutigersFTW
we'll be around .500 overall, with a losing SEC record, we'll win a COUPLE games that we won't be favored in bc Tone will go off, other than that, i just don't expect much this year
