Certainly in self defense situations, you don't have time to calculate everything.

But I have a question

How safe would you feel discharging your weapon while on your knees leaning forward directly over a 12" thick soft target with a concrete back stop? Assume the distance between your face and the backstop is 36" or less and the muzzle of your firearm is about half that distance or 18" from the concrete?

Is this related to the shooting in BR?

Either way I wouldn't feel all that safe.

You mean to practice or in a self defense situation?

Well considering it would have to go through the 12 in thick soft target hit the concrete backstop then travel back through a 12" thick soft target before it was a danger I would be willing to take the risk if I felt my life was in danger. Definitely wouldn't do it for fun

yea..just a weird real world situation all the way around. Will be studied by LEAs/LEOs going forward in the future I'm sure.
When the bullshite woah is me crowd disappears in a few weeks and the real details emerge I'm curious to see what really went down.

lol, some of yall would down vote ya mothers.

I am not advocating practicing in this fashion but certainly we have all seen some really questionable training practice videos. There is some practical application for me though as I frequently shoot trapped hogs. We rarely (although sometimes we do) set traps on concrete, but the traps are made of heavy gauge steel. We did have one fella in town get shot by a ricocheting 357 round that went through a hogs neck hit a trap and went back into the shooters leg.

For a more real world example, how close would you fire rounds into a 12" deep ballistics gel pressed against a hardened backstop? Does 18" of muzzle relief seem safe to anyone? Most self defense shootings occur well within a 10 ft range.

No bueno. I'm not sure I'm 100% comfortable at 12' (144") from muzzle to ballistic wall, but I've seen range specs for that small.

No way I'm doing practice shooting with my face a yardstick from a concrete wall at which I'm shooting.

Is shooting a fmj bullet of would be scared shitless.

With an expanding hollow point, like a little safer, but still in the scared shitless category.

But this is probably the last thing I would be thinking about.

Seems dangerous to practice. Seems you would practice extremely close shooting on a backstop made of dirt. Real world is different as several have stated. When your life is on the line the safe environment of a range isnt reality and you accept the risk of ricochet.

I don't like shooting low flying quail in a rocky ravine with 12 gauge lead shot. I damn sure won't be shooting at concrete 36 inches away no matter what kind of material is between it and myself.

Could this be a good defense: "Victim has four holes, but we only shot twice. Bullet bounced off concrete."

As long as you shoot at an angle...

Oh, I agree. In the BR shooting you would have be thinking about staying alive and nothing else.

I believe they said 6 shots were fired. Accounting for each of those rounds will be important and interesting. The report he was shot in the back may actually be a re entrance wound though, conceivably.

I practice at 21 feet. That's the range that, from there to you, you are vulnerable to someone getting to you quickly that you can't avoid.

I knew what you were getting at but this still reads sketchy!

I shoot a 9mm hollow point at my hogs. I try to shoot at an angle so hopefully if it did ricochet, it wouldn't come back at me. Dad just shoots them with a .22 by just sticking it in the trap and putting it against their ear.

I do a few types of self defense shooting.

Drawing and back pedaling a 20 ft.

The much more realistic draw while inside three silhouettes. Draw and put one in each while backing up. Under a 2 sec9nds is good. I aim for under 1. Not there yet.

In response to your question, 100% safe to me. More of a risk of that bullet careening off of a bone on such a big guy.

I mean it's not ideal but it's better than the alternative.
