I was there as a tourist. Imagine a concrete jungle full of wealthy, show off brats trying hard to buy charm and culture that doesn't naturally exist on the backs of slaves from the 3rd world while trying hard not to expose religious fundamentalism. That's Dubai.

Seriously, Dubai should be nuked. It's one of the worst cities on the planet, and anyone who doesn't see it is either ignorant or a monster.

I have an interview on the 11th, already found a place to stay with central AC for 850 a month, just curious if it is worth going.

One of my best friends lived there for two years. He was recently married when they headed over there. His wife is from NOLA and went to LSU. Basically, she spent the first 24 years of her life between Biloxi and BR. She had never been anywhere that wasn't on the Bayou.

So, short story is that when he told her they were moving to Dubai, she cried for two days. Two years later, when he told her they were leaving Dubai, and headed back to Mandeville, she cried for a week.

Some great stories from over there. He was kind of a slob. But his condo had live-in servants. He would walk in from outside, take off his shirt, and throw it on the floor. Then, he'd go to the fridge and get a cold drink, turn around, and his shirt had vanished. An hour later it would appear laundered and folded on his bed. He said it was like living with ghosts.

He also said they would go to parties where there would be $25,000 worth of caviar set out in ice goblets on a buffet. Maybe 20-30 people at the party. Maybe 5% of the caviar gets eaten. When the party is over, the servants spoon the caviar into the trash. No big deal.

He also said that making money is so easy over there, that the family companies are usually turned over to the son at age 19 or 20. He will run it for 6-8 years to keep busy. Then, he will retire and get married and have kids at about age 30. Then turn the company over to a younger cousin or something.

Making money is so easy, it's not considered legitimate work for an adult. It's literally child's play.

As a side note, he said they absolutely murdered the sailfish, Dorado, and cobia when he was over there. They'd load the boat by 8 am and be back in by 9:30. Because it was too hot to fish after that.

He'd go back in a heartbeat.

Seems lIke it would be easy to end up in prison for virtually nothing.

Like the European woman that was drugged and raped, then sent to prison for having sex (rape) outside of marriage?

One of my dads good friends owns an offshore charter fleet out of Dubai. Wears the tuna out.

He just bought a house there so I assume he likes the area enough.

no way man. Its probably the safest large city in the world.

I liked it there. people were courteous to others. nobody was an ignorant loudmouth or walking around with their arse hanging out blaring rap music. workers in stores were all courteous and helpful. The city is in great shape.

IMHO you would have to really frick up to get in trouble. As long as you dont mouth off to a local or get drunk and act the arse, you are good. I mean, every hotel bar is packed full of whores from every part of the world. No way they would allow that kind of shite if they were trying to be overly strict. Be respectful to others and you wont have any problems.

I wouldn't be working in oil obviously but it is still 2x the amount of money I make now and tax free apparently.

I think anything under 90k is tax free.

also be prepared, it is much more expensive for everything there. beer was like 9 each. a fast food type meal from what I remember was 10-20 dollars.

Looked into apartments and I can find a 1 bedroom, 1 bath, with central AC near the metro for 800. I wouldn't need a car so I would sell mine here if I got the job.
