If you scroll up there was discussion about stock portfolios. As part of our comp plan we receive stock options as a sign on bonus.

Yes, but $742 doesn't matter. If the price was higher or lower then the company would adjust the numbers of shares so that the amount is equal.
Everything I know about Amazon is that it is a type-A, put up-or shut up type atmosphere. I am sure it is amazing for about 2 years but the reality is most people don't want to do that for very long. Most of society wants a life outside of their career.
