If I had to guess, which I am here, I would say that they are not getting all that great of yields yet on the GDDR5X memory. This is the same thing AMD is going through with the upcoming Vega GPU's and the low yields on the HBM2 memory.

If there are any yield issues with Pascal, it's probably with the 16nm FinFET GPUs. But more likely, NVidia just rushed to be first to market and simply didn't have enough ready to ship.

Completely off base. Memory is the less of their issues.

Finfet 16nm, the new archetecture.
