Fun Fact: the simulator for the A12 was located in the back of a fully functional grocery store staffed by CIA employees. True story.

It wasn't designed to sit on the ground, chief.

C.I.A. created several cover-up companies which were used to purchase the required Titanium for the construction of Blackbirds from Soviet Union – quite ironic considering a lot of missions consisted of relaying intel about the country that the materials were purchased from.

Eglin has an SR-71 not an A-12.
Fun fact of the 9 A-12's left 3 of those are on display in Alabama and 3 in California. The last 3 are split between New York, Washington and Virginia.

Watched a documentary where they said that while in service, SR-71s were fired on over 4000 times, and no plane was ever lost due to enemy fire.
Also, when doing BDA after the Libya bombing in 1986, it was shot at by the "state of the art" Soviet high altitude SAM and flat out outran the missile.

Saw one at the SAC museum between Lincoln and Omaha. Pretty cool place but that plane has always fascinated me.

A total of 12 out of the 32 aircraft built were lost. The important thing to take note of is that none of the Blackbirds were lost due to enemy military retaliation. All SR-71 crew had to do upon a missile launch, was to increase the throttle and watch the missile get further and further away from striking distance.

Brian Shul talks about this in "Sled Driver". Basically, you'd see the missile climbing behind you and then at some point it would explode, but the explosion almost looked like it was happening in reverse and was an implosion because you were flying away so fast and it was receding in the distance.

I've been there. Not for years though. I grew up near there.
