Hopefully, no one. The number 8 "tradition" needs to die.

All it is doing now is creating tension on the team and putting undue pressure on the player wearing it.

Make Chris Guillot wear it.....

I love the number 8. It's an intriguing number.

For example, if you take the square of any odd integer of the form 2k-1 (k>=1) and subtract it from the square of 2k+1, the result is a multiple of 8.

Is that weird or what?!

But as far as having the coaches anoint someone to wear the number 8, that's not helpful to the team. It was a good idea when Mikie asked Mason Katz to wear it the year after Mikie left to keep "some green freshman from wearing my number."

But it should have stopped after Mason left, IMO.

This season that just ended, several of the returning players thought Kramer should wear it and when Fraley was given the number there was an under current of subtle resentment towards him. He didn't deserve that resentment and I believe it put pressure on him to prove he deserved wearing it, although Kramer did a good job of quieting the tension. The players already have enough pressure on them and don't need any added pressure from wearing a symbolic uniform number.

I don't sense any tension at all, but if it did as you claim, CPM could easily put an end to it.

The added "pressure" from wearing a particular jersey number is +/- zero.

How about who plays center field? I'll never understand fans' fixations with players passing numbers down.

this.

especially considering it's been passed down like once and isn't a real tradition.

Yes, he could, and the easiest way to do that is by not anointing a player to wear it.

Then I wonder why Fraley told me the week before the season began that he was honored to wear it but felt pressure to prove he deserved it? Maybe he was wrong.....

ETA: Fraley had the second most at bats and second highest number of hits on the team. Yet he only had the 6th highest number of rbi's. I wonder if, when he came to bat with runners in scoring position, did he think to himself, "I've got to drive in these runs to prove I deserve wearing #8."??? We'll never know but he became Mr. Un-clutch in driving in runs for the season. He was much better in 2015 at driving in runs. Last season he drove in only one less rbi on 18 fewer hits and 42 fewer at bats.
