can somebody give me a general overview of the show?

i don't know if i want to get invested in a new show and may push this aside until streaming down the road. curious if it's worth watching in real time

how have the first few episodes been?

I would also like to know this. Just for reference, have you read or are you familiar with the source material?

been decent, a little slow in some areas..but, it needs to be slow in those areas.

Cassidy is stealing the show, should watch. Nothing to lose if you come in with no expectations. May enjoy it a lot.

The setting: West Texas

The cast: A preacher with a dubious background, a vampire, a crazy thief lady, and townsfolk.

I think this is a supernatural story set in the middle of bumfrick, nowhere. It's violent, profane and pretty bloody (so far) -- I'm sure it will push the boundaries on all of the above as well.

Synopsis: Bad things happen to everyone.

So far it's interesting, but I'd wait till 6 eps or so are out so that you can binge watch - before starting on this (mainly because I hate waiting).

PS. I have NOT read the comic that this is based on.

It is a fun watch but it is all over the place. Preacher and Cassidy characters are great.
Cassidy's "He's walking around with an arsehole for a face" line was hilarious.

Seems like though (IMO) it will take 5 episodes for things to tie together. Unrelated note--I liked 'Feed the Beast' that followed.

Well there's only been two episodes so far; not much of an investment.

I am a huge, huge fan of the original comic. The show strays significantly from the comic in some places. I'm still enjoying it though.

The show is doing a good job of letting the audience know that anything goes. Its odd. Very odd at times. But fun.

I never knew much about it until the AMC series. I'd say it is definitely a must watch. And I get the sense it will get even better.

Compared to TWD, it's much less depressing and more fun.

ETA: like somebody said, it does have some Tarintino influence and style. It is basically a Western with supernatural and/or extraterrestrial stuff added in.

I find it pretty entertaining. Better than most of what's on tv now.

I haven't read the comics so there's no frame of reference going in which I think ultimately makes it better.

Give it a watch. It's only two episodes in. If you don't like it then you really haven't wasted much time.

Preacher tells the story of Jesse Custer, a preacher in the small Texas town of Annville. Custer is possessed by an alien/supernatural entity.

Driven by a strong sense of right and wrong, Custer begins to discover the truth about his new powers. They allow him, when he wills it, to command the obedience of those who hear and comprehend his words. He is joined by his old girlfriend Tulip O'Hare, as well as a hard-drinking Irish vampire named Cassidy.

This a modified/abbreviated version of the comic synopsis.

Now take the synopsis above and imagine it as a collaborative project between Tarantino and Sam Raimi with creative input from the Coen brothers.
