tried searching but keeps erroring out on here.
going to DC next week for a few days, I think we're staying in the U Street area, wherever that is.

Can't go wrong with any of Jose' Andres' joints----Jaleo, Ozamel or Zatinaya--I think those are the names.

I go there several times a year for work and these are some of my favorites from where our DC employees and vendors have taken me. I'm usually north of the mall, so I don't know much east and south other than bar hopping on H street.
Close to you:
Compass Rose for Mediterranean
Takoda for beer/whiskey/food
Drift for seafood
Keren for Ethopian,
Others:
Matchbox or &Pizza for Pizza
A baked Joint for coffee and dessert
Dacha or Granville Moore's for Beer and Mussels
Espita for mexican bar food and mescal flights
Carving Room for burgers, sandwiches, and beer
Alta Strada for Italian
Churchkey for beer
The Monocle to rub elbows with senators. Union Pub or 201 Bar to hear staffers bitch about their senators.
ETA: shite, I forgot about Jaleo for Tapas. Ruzil is right, any Jose Andres place is going to be good.

very nice, thanks for the suggestions.
it'll be my first time so I'm really looking forward to it.

If you're going to Capitol Hill and the Mall, the Native American museum has the best food of all the mesuems and the Korean deli in the Russell Senate building is really good. The rest of the food is pretty mundane.

I just got back, and I really need to do a review of Rose's Luxury. The line on a Tuesday was not bad at all, and I can't say enough good things about the place.
Thip Khao for Laotioan. Second the Keren suggestion although it's technically Eritrean, not Ethiopian. Proof has a $14 lunch that includes an entree and glass of wine. Their hazelnut cake dessert was the best dessert I've had in awhile.
We usually stay near Dupont Circle, so Russia House happy hour martinis and casual fare from Food Corner Kebob House are always on our list.

Nice, I thought I was fancy when I told people I ate Ethiopian food. Eritrean sounds even more exotic.

For a great burger, hit up Ben's on U Street. Their chili burger is incredible.

Best burger in town IMO is at Good Stuff Eatery in Georgetown and Capitol Hill.

Yeah, they're very good as well. I like chili on my burger and I think Ben's has them beat there. I wouldn't turn anyone away from either.

Blue Duck Tavern is legit. We ate there on our trip last year and absolutely loved it. We plan on going back again when there next year.

Freddy's BBQ Joint has the best ribs in town.

Here is my list of D.C. favorites, some of which have been mentioned already: Tosca for Italian, Rasika for Indian, Zaytanya for Mediterranean food. Blue Duck Tavern is very good, as is Central. The Old Ebbitt Grill is an old historic place with a fun bar.
