FWIW, I had a swimming panic once like that. I was swimming in a lake testing a wetsuit the day before a half iron man (first and last one I did!). Wet suit didn't fit well and I was really struggling. Had to stop and float on my back and try to settle my composure. Screamed for help, but I guess folks on the shore thought I was ok. Calmed myself down enough to make it in, but I thought I was a goner.

I keep wondering why didn't they throw a life jacket or something ... idk. The whole damn thing is so sad.
