Crying it out because of ear ache, teething, gas, fever is not okay imo

I do admit sometimes it can be difficult on rare occasions. Like a few weeks ago, he was being a little sh*t for like two hours. We went in his room multiple times. Then finally we said it was time to let him cry a little longer since as soon as went in the room he'd shut up and be fine. No signs of distress as long as we were there. He went in and out of crying for the next 45 minutes. Not straight, but cry for 5, sleep for 10, repeat. Finally got up to check on him and he had a dirty diaper. I felt like crap after that. But he had been playing that game all night. Even after his poop, he wouldn't go to bed until I slept in the guest room with him. We hate co-sleeping, but sometimes it's the only way we can function the next day (on the rare occasion he does wake up).

This past week, he was fussy and we could tell he wasn't going down. So after two attempts, we'd "sleep" with him. Although not much sleep went on. After 3 nights, we noticed his ears had more "wax" than normal. He has tubes and they were on the verge of getting infected. We could easily tell those nights that it wasn't normal and after him waking up twice and crying for a few minutes each, we abandoned the cry it out method. Only wish we could have caught the ear thing sooner (no fever, no redness or pain)
