I did two weeks of travelling in Japan. My sister's son reads, writes & speaks Japanese. He was working there and took off the entire time and we travelled together We started in Tokyo, did Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Kagoshima and took a ferry to Yakushima. (Recommended!)

Without having him to speak to everyone we dealt with, it's my opinion that a trip alone to anywhere in Japan outside of downtown Tokyo is not advised for the average American.

With a Japanese speaker it was wonderful.

My two highlights, IJN Mikasa and Yakushima.

The Shinkansen are wonderful. Next time we go it will be to Nothrern Japan.

We actually did fine in Japan without knowing any Japanese. Toured Tokyo, made a stop in Hakone for a day and got to see Mt Fuji, then headed on to Kyoto and eventually Osaka. Had a great time and didn't struggle with the language barrier nearly as much as we thought we would. Google translate app is your best friend. Yoniwa and Hyperdia apps are also very useful.
