We are well traveled in Europe, but not Asia at all. Tokyo, osaka, kobe, Kyoto are all definites.

We definitely need help on our first Asian trip.

Tokyo you need a lot of money. I spent $10 on a cup of coffee and a roll in the Airport.

I did two weeks of travelling in Japan. My sister's son reads, writes & speaks Japanese. He was working there and took off the entire time and we travelled together We started in Tokyo, did Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Kagoshima and took a ferry to Yakushima. (Recommended!)

Without having him to speak to everyone we dealt with, it's my opinion that a trip alone to anywhere in Japan outside of downtown Tokyo is not advised for the average American.

With a Japanese speaker it was wonderful.

My two highlights, IJN Mikasa and Yakushima.

The Shinkansen are wonderful. Next time we go it will be to Nothrern Japan.
