I traded in a vehicle in 2015. It was later sold to a wholesaler with my license plate on it and while still registered to me. Several month later it is involved in an accident with no insurance
Here I am over a year later getting calls from collection and trying to get my suspended license reinstated due to some dumb frick
I know some car dealers are on here. How in the hell does something like this happen

Perhaps the dumb frick that didn't take his plate and turn it in?

Not being an arse but why would you leave the plate on it?

This is on you. You take the plates with you and in some states you can even have them sign a form of the transfer.

You should keep your old license plate when you trade a vehicle in, or have it moved onto the new vehicle.

never leave your plate on the vehicle for starters

Umm...once it was no longer yours why would you still have it registered in your name? With the damn plate on it to boot.

Is it not commonplace when you swap cars to put the old plates on the new car?

When I donated my mom's car, I was told to take the plate to the DMV and get a receipt. Wasn't this how some people got into insurance trouble on the news recently because cars were sold but still registered to them and they were expected to pay insurance? Definitely should remove plate.
