One took a bad step and fractured it's leg, the other had a heart attack or aneurism.
Same things can happen to horses anywhere at anytime (like in a pasture).
Just shite luck to happen on Preakness day.

I'm sure it has nothing at all to do with doping.
I mean it's like two players die on the day of the super bowl at the stadium, but it is just bad luck ya know, they could have easily croaked dead out on the practice field.... But they didn't and happened to die on one of the biggest days of their respective lives.
