Heard Papa was a Rolling Stone on the way to work yesterday. The whole song is set up by the opening line. It made me wonder...what are some of the best opening lines in song lyrics.

"It was the 3rd of September, a day I'll always remember, 'cause that was the day my Daddy died".

Not the best, but regardless of what people think about Hootie and the Blowfish

"She sits alone by a lamp post; trying to find a thought that escaped her mind"

is pretty descriptive.

Others that I thought of after pondering a bit, and was amazed at how many awesome openers John Prine wrote:

"Sam Stone came home to his wife and family, after serving in the conflict overseas" ~ Sam Stone, John Prine

"I am an old woman, named after my mother. My old man's another child whose grown old" ~ Angel From Montgomery, John Prine

"I knew a girl who was almost a lady. She had a way with all the men in her life. Every inch of her blossomed in beauty. She was born on the 4th of July" ~ The Great Compromise, John Prine

"It was Christmas in prison and the food was real good. We had turkey and pistols carved out of wood" ~ Christmas in Prison, John Prine

"In an Appalachian Greyhound station, she sits there waiting in a family way" ~ Unwed Fathers, John Prine

"When I was a boy my family would travel down to Western Kentucky where my parents were born. There's a backwards old town that's often remembered so many times that my memories are worn" ~ Paradise, John Prine

"Seen the lights go out on Broadway, I saw the Empire State laid low."

"You can tell by the way I use my walk, I'm a woman's man, no time to talk."

"A modern day warrior, mean, mean stride, today's Tom Sawyer, mean, mean pride."

Oh how sadly sound the songs, the queen must sing of dying. A prisoner upon her throne of melancholy sighing.

Oh a storm in threatening my very life today

Dearly beloved, we're gathered here today to get through this thing called life

Out here in the fields, I fought for my meals

Lately I've been feeling low
A remedy is what I'm seeking
I take a taste of what's below
Come away to something better
What I want is what I've not got
And what I need
Is all around me
Reaching searching never stop
