I just built a new house and am about to install the landscaping myself. I have heard that there are a ton of nurseries in Forest Hill and I am wondering a couple of things:

1) How many of the nurseries sell to retail customers? My worry is that they only deal with wholesale.

2) Can I really save enough money going up there from Baton Rouge to buy all my plants to make it cost effective?

TIA!

Check Doug Young, just act like youve been there before if you know what Im saying

ETA: The prices are unreal. You can save hundreds to thousands depending on how much you are doing.

There are a shite load of nurseries, lots of them sell to the public.

I've always heard it's worth going up there, no first hand experience though.

Yes. Talking about 1/3 to 1/4 the retail cost in some cases. It's crazy how much cheaper.

Langston has some connections up there, perhaps he will see this. There are A LOT of nurseries up there. Some specialize on certain plants, others have other plants. IT is really impressive.

There are tons, it won't be hard to find one that sells retail. I pass thru there all the time but I have never bought there. I'm told if youre doing a whole yard from scratch, then yes it's worth it.

I was just looking at their pricing sheet online. Literally 1/4 of the prices of local nurseries. If you're buy quite a bit, then it would definitely be worth a couple hour drive.

Just make sure you have a way to cover all that stuff. Who knows what it would look like after 2 hours of 70mph in the bed of a truck.

I may go down there one weekend.

You know what I would do? I would call one - particularly one on the main drag. Regardless if they do or don't, but I bet they can tell you those who do sell to folks off the street. And, you can also get an idea of what plants they have and who else in the area might carry what you're looking for.

That's what I would do before I drove to Forest Hill, and it's only about half an hour drive for me.

Definitely worth the drive. There are a lot and plenty of choices so shop around and you won't be disappointed

Definitely worth it. Will save you plenty of money. Building my 4th house now and made the drive for my first three and will being doing it on this one. I borrow a buddy's enclosed 20' trailer, but an open trailer with tarp would work. Most places will make you do self-service, but with a little research and planning you will be fine. Just know what you want and what it looks like.

We go to Doug Young once a year. I tow a 5x8. My wife tows a 5x8. And my cousin does as well.

We typically buy trees of all kinds. They will wrap everything with paper and string for you for a tip.

Saves us a few hundred bucks a year and is actually quite fun to explore.

Well worth the effort. A covered trailer is best option to bring stuff back. Flat trailer w no sides is much tougher on vegetation.

Doug Young! They sell to anyone. Make a list of exactly what you want. Drive up to the office part and get a map. Write the locations on the map next to each thing on your list. Jot down everything you buy and the price on their purchase sheet. They use an honor system at checkout. We have saved thousands by going there for just one house. 5$ a piece for 36 ileagnus. Hannah Ray bottle brush was 79 at DY and 279 in Lafayette for same size tree. I could go on and on. So worth the drive. You are doing it right by getting an enclosed trailer.

I live in Forest Hill.

DYN is one of the biggest and should have everything you need.

Check out Sam Stokes for vegetables and ornamental/bedding plants. He's probably getting ready to close up for the summer and you might snag some deals.

I should mention my in-laws place as well but since I live on the edge of their property I won't. Don't need you baws creeping around my mobile estate so just got to DYN and stay off my lawn.
