Don't "cold call," but when I applied for jobs out of college, I would submit applications. Then a few days after (if feasible), I would go in person to the office and ask if I could speak briefly with whoever the contact person was. Sometimes, it would be a swing and a miss, but sometimes they would be available and I could introduce myself and let them know that I applied for the job.
This. Or calling a few days after for out of state jobs works well too.

HR doesn't do the interviewing where I work, there are interview teams from each department who do the interviewing and selecting. HR does all the paperwork.

Unfortunately, HR people and hiring managers think everyone else is beneath them and interviewing applicants is such a miserable chore.

I have probably dealt with HR people from 20 different companies over the past year trying to climb the ladder. Good for your job, but hit 19 other companies and get back at me

How interviews/jobs are landed
10% Merit/grades
15% Connections
10% Internships
75% Luck - your resume just happens to be on the top of the pile

Why do HR people hate interviewing when that is supposed to be there job.
I've never interviewed with HR. I've had phone calls from HR where an obvious screening process was happening - "we got your resume & Jim from ops is interested in interviewing you, but we just need to verify...". Once you prove you can speak English and aren't drunk in the middle of the day then you go to the formal interview with the person you will be working for.
Oh, and to quantify and earlier point - a lot of fat, miserable women who know nothing about the business they work for are in HR.

I've gotten every one of my jobs through online applications. No connection. Usually there is contact info on the job description, if it's a job i really want I'll apply then send an email saying thanks for the consideration. I'm 4/5 with that method, 2 were fairly large companies.
Also, you need to cater your resume to the job. I work in HR and most large companies have a computer system that picks up words in your resume and will flag it for review. So if the job description has certain certifications or requirements make sure you list them if you have them.
Depends on the company. Sometimes HR only does screening, sometimes they do 1st round interviews then recommend candidates to the hiring manager, sometimes they do the entire process. It just depends how the company functions.

The first part is usually true at most companies.
The HR people will talk to you on a first round interview (usually over the phone) to filter out who is and who isn't a total dumbass.
I had one of these today as a matter of fact. Applied for this job two three days ago, 2 days later, I get an email setting me up for a phone interview the very next day.
Then, the HR rep will submit the list of viable candidates to a hiring manager who then will get the 2nd round of interviews lined up for scheduling.
More often than not, there will be. 3rd round of interviews where you will most likely interview with your direct supervisor and you are basically the man they want for the job. you will have to be a colossal screw-up to not get it at that point.
To answer your other question, I actually was talking to a guy in a related field with my job and he told me about this opening I applied for. So, word of mouth and experience are two HUGE factors in getting noticed and getting an interview.

It sounds like you're set on applying for positions without knowing whether or not they are open. It is possible to strike gold this way, but the odds are slim.
Use job search sites to find open positions for which you are qualified and that you think you would enjoy doing.
Don't be afraid of recruiters. I have contracted the services of recruiters on MANY occasions when I didn't get enough qualified applicants respond to ads on job sites. A good recruiter can serve as a contact in companies where you don't have one.

Funny, same here except I didn't get the courteous email to set up a phone interview. A job I applied for yesterday actually, but had applied for other similar positions in the company a few weeks ago. About 11:00 this morning I get a call from a St. Louis, MO number and we talked for about 20 mins and had the normal, "tell me about a time when...." And "how much would you require in salary for this position" Questions, then proceeded to schedule me for an in person interview in 2 weeks(out of state job so we had to schedule a day in which I could request the vacation day off from my current employer).

it's all inside baseball.... dont be fooled. why approach a company blind without at least face card in your pocket? too many people with no jobs and great connections out there.

Well, that's great man! Good luck to you!!
At least they told you that.
My HR guy told me they usually sit down with the hiring managers on Thursdays and I won't hear back from them until next Friday after he sits down with management, which may be bullshite. I don't know.
But if I got a 2nd interview, it would be in Nashville. Apparently, it's a whole day process. They make you take a test and then you got to go through the formal interviews.

Same here. I have to sit down and take an assessment test when I get up there. Best of luck to you in your search man!!
