I just bought an 06 silverado z71 and I am having trouble getting it into 4 low. It will go into 4 high no problem but when the 4 low button is pressed you hear a clunk in the back but it just stays in 2 high. this is my first 4x4 truck. any help is good help. thanks!

Are you putting it in neutral? Has to be in neutral to go to 4 low

I can't remember if you are allowed to go straight from 2wd to 4lo or not, but the above process is how I've always done it

had an 06 GMC that the 4L button light burnt out or just stopped working but it would shift

I have the same model and have changed the encoder motor that engages the 4wd twice and the switches that send the signal to the motor. Knock on wood, 164k miles and no issues other than those.

Had an 04, that coder shift motor started getting squirrely at about 75K when I traded that POS off. Cranked the truck one day and the somb was in 4L!

I used to turn the engine off to shift to 4L in the 04 and previous 94 I had.
