what i'm trying to figure out is why is the catcher penalized for making a mistake and not having awareness while the batter is pretty much getting off with no penalty. shouldn't both know what's going on?
Well one of the "mistakes" resulted in a positive result for the batting team and the other didn't. The mistake on the batter doesn't really have any ramifications no matter what happens from the defense. The catcher did the worst possible thing in this scenario.
I think it is worth noting that the way the OP described it doesn't seem to imply any intentional deceit from the batter. He just wasn't paying attention and incidentally duped the catcher into a mistake.

quote:That's my point. You don't get a re-do for having your head up your arse. In this case the catcher should know the count. Hold onto the ball and let the batter look like an idiot sprinting down the first base line with two strikes. I don't see why the umpire should protect the defense in this case. It's something a team can only try once in a blue moon. This would be like protecting a base runner from the hidden ball trick.
if a runner doesn't tag on a 1 out fly ball thinking there's two outs and gets called out for not tagging, he doesn't get the benefit of the doubt for making a mistake and a retry.
