Where will you be staying on the island?

Will you have a rental car?

Regardless of your answers, go to St. John and when you aren't there, you need to be on your own catamaran in the BVIs.

St Thomas not near the destination that nearby St. John is. If I were you I'd change venues.

Unless you're staying at the Ritz Carlton or the big Marriott on St. Thomas, I'd VRBO a villa on St. John.

Megans Bay is beautiful, but the waves are not too much. But for a nice beach with wonderful views, it's top notch.
There is an aquarium / aqua park that is OK, but nothing really exciting.

We stayed at Frenchman's Reef in August. It was pretty good, but I'd go with what other people are saying and stay on St, John if you can. You get off resort property and it feels like Hollygrove with a view.
