I lived in the area for 3 years. Get a cabin on Wears Valley Rd. Enter the park through Townsend to avoid the parkway traffic.

My most enjoyable trip was three years ago, had a small cabin on 321, about two miles outside of Townsend. They had a couple of really good places to eat out there. The cabin (Black Bear Hollow) was only $85 a night and had two bedrooms, a private jacuzzi and three private acres. Only downside was it was on the road, but we were there in winter so that was a plus.
