Maybe because of the cap getting bigger, but I'm not sure. When you're that old(relatively), a year can make a big difference. I'd rather negotiate at 37 coming off a healthy and league-leading passing season than 38 with who knows what kind of season or shape. Peyton Mainning went from setting all time records and winning the MVP in his 37-year-old season to a weak-armed sort of embarrassment just 2 years later. And he's 6'5". Drew is barely 6'0". I think he's taking a pretty big gamble not extending now. I hope to God it's not true, but I'd bet he's in at least a little worse negotiating place this time next year.
This may be true, but keep in mind this truth that too many Saints fans can't accept...Drew doesn't give a frick about the team, the city, or its fan base; he was offered a more than reasonable contract extension but refused to sign it because he wanted more per year and more guaranteed.

He will play out his contract and unless the Saints offer him a contract next year that will make him the highest paid QB in the history of the world, he will walk and sign with whoever ponies up the most money.

Granted, he is beloved by Saints fans(and I agree wth you that the feeling is not quite mutual), but he is pretty transparently a business man. That doesn't preclude him from loving and being dedicated to the team--I think he works his arse off to be the best he can be, which only helps the Saints. The difference between him and Brady is that Brady cares more about his image--I think he is extremely determined to go down as the best of all time. His legacy as the best is most important to him, Drew seems to be settling for being the best he can be. Both are selfish in that they're so into people's perception of them, but us regular Joes seem to respect Brady's "sacrifice" more because he appears to be taking less to,help the team. But to be fair, Drews wife is not balling out of control like Giselle.

According to you, they already offered him that, and he turned it down

Derp

Tell me more about Payton being a lock to leave for Dallas.
